As a result of the success achieved by the U13 team in 2009, Grange was invited to send a team to the Primrose Hill Indoor Tournament at the Lords Indoor Cricket School on 20 March. The tournament was a round robin event including teams from Primrose Hill CC (Middlesex), Tunbridge Wells CC (Kent), Aston Rowant (Oxfordshire) and Grange. The tournament was played under Australian indoor cricket rules with 7 players per team playing 12 overs per side, with each player (except the keeper) bowling 2 overs and batsmen staying in until reaching 25 or being dismissed. After spending Friday afternoon touring Lords and having a net session at the indoor school under the guidance of Angus Fraser (England & Middlesex), Grange opened the tournament against the hosts. Grange batted first and Duncan Player lead the way initially retiring on 25 then returning at the end of the innings only to be run out for 27 off the last ball. George Hairs (13) and Rory Turnbull (12), batting sensibly, helped Grange post 76 from their 12 overs, the second highest score of the tournament. In response the Primrose Hill innings was never allowed to gain momentum as Grange bowlers dominated. Rory (2 for 6), Duncan (2 for 7) and Cameron Sloman (1 for 2) shared the wickets (1 run out) as Primrose Hill were bowled out for 25 giving Grange a 51 run win and a very good start to the day. Next-up was Aston Rowant. Again Grange batted first and after losing some early wickets, Tom Sole (17) guided the Grange total to 69 with help from Cameron (14) and some wayward bowling from Aston Rowant. As in the first match, tight Grange bowling restricted the Aston Rowant reply and with Tom (1 for 3), Duncan (1 for 3) and Will Edwards (1 for 5) getting wickets, Aston Rowant were held to 35 from their 12 overs giving Grange a second win from 2 games. The final round robin game was against Tunbridge Wells and by this point in the tournament, it was known that this would be a dress rehearsal for the final. Tunbridge Wells had also won their previous 2 games and therefore both teams were keen to win and take some momentum into the final. Unlike the first 2 games, Grange was asked to bowl first but as in the preceding matches, Grange continued to bowl tightly and restricted Tunbridge Wells to 56 all out in their 12th over, a score built around 25 scored by Marcus O'Reardon, a Kent County player. 1 wicket each for Will (1 for 5), Duncan (1 for 7), Mark Allan (1 for 8) and Tom (1 for 10) plus 2 run-outs kept the Tunbridge Wells batsmen in check. In response, Grange chased down the target in style with Tom (23) and Matthew Angelini (21) sharing an unbroken partnership of 40 and reaching 57 in the 9th over for the loss of only 1 wicket. So to the final. Tunbridge Wells won the toss and again chose to bat first however like each of the 3 games prior to this, Grange bowlers dominated the bat. Wickets went to Cameron (3 for 3), Will (1 for 7) and Rory (1 for 8) although all 6 bowlers kept their runs against to single figures and in combination with some positive, disciplined fielding, held Tunbridge Wells to 40 off their 12 overs. In response, after the loss of 2 early wickets, Will (14) and Tom (9) shared an unbroken stand of 32 to see Grange home with 3 overs to spare. Tom was deservedly given player of the tournament honours for his consistent performances with both bat and ball in the 4 matches played, however all members of the team contributed through-out and should be proud of their performances. Sensible batting, consistent bowling and positive fielding drew praise from the coaches of the other 3 teams involved and was a credit to the club and a great advertisement for cricket in Scotland. Team: Mark Allan, Matthew Angelini (keeper), Will Edwards (captain), George Hairs, Fergus Kell, Duncan Player, Tom Sole, Cameron Sloman, Rory Turnbull. |
