Grange Win Inaugural Under 8's Match Against Carlton
Written by hound
Grange 328 Carlton 281.

After having been rained off twice the much anticipated Under 8's 'Battle of Edinburgh' took place under sunny skies at Stag Park.

I believe this to be the youngest ever competitive Grange Cricket fixture and I was delighted by the behaviour of our our boys and the standard of their Cricket (we also won, which is always sort of the point).

The Under 8's battled it out over a two innings a side game, 16 over's each in total, an epic Junior Test Match. Two of the big red Aussie stands made for a great arena, an even better target for the junior sluggers and also good accommodation for the healthy crowd.

Captain Freddie Peet (apparently a close relative of the Coach) lost the toss (the Carlton Captain having waited for the coin to land and then correctly calling a head!) and we were inserted. Ben Davidson and Jake Cropper opened up and some lusty six hitting especially from Ben followed, not a blocker like his old man, and the Stags were up and running. Messrs Finlay Campbell and Charlie Peet (at six years old, the youngest on show) formed the 1st element of the engine room middle order and the classic right hand/land hand combo contributed to more steady run accumulation. Freddie and Robert Edwards injected further momentum and with 5 and 6 at the crease the six count continued to mount. Finally Michael Buchan and Aidan Cross propelled the Grange to a 1st innings score of 328 (started with 200).

Excellent bowling and fielding from all then generally kept Carlton under wraps with the exception of one young man with glasses who Charlie and Finlay had the misfortune to bowl at (Coach Peet had a word with his Parents, showed them the Grange Trophy Cabinet and we expect a cross Edinburgh transfer to take place over the Winter). Special mention for a good catch from Freddie and superb bowling from Michael.

At the half way mark, the Grange enjoyed a good lead. The second innings for both teams showed a continued improvement as the 1st innings nerves playing in front of the big stands and enthusiastic crowd were long gone. Wickets and sixes followed for both teams. Ben hooked one over deep square leg into Row Z for a mighty 6 (unlike his Dad though this is not his only shot), Robert accumulated in classy fashion while Freddie favoured lusty blows to leg, Charlie hit a flat 6 through extra cover, Finlay popped one into the crowd over fine leg, Jake drove straight and true, Mikey continued at a run a ball, Aidan ran well and added some 4's. We posted a total of 328, which represented 100 to win for our visitors from their 8 over's. Special mention for our running between the wickets, which was excellent and a key difference between the two teams. Tight bowling from all again, a maiden from the Captain one highlight, and really sharp fielding produced a number of run outs and the run chase proved a bridge too far for the Carlton boys.

In the end both teams took a lot from a really fun game. Thanks to Carlton for being such game opposition and to all the boys for actually doing what their Coaches have been teaching them. An away fixture will follow next summer and I hope all the Grange boys keep working on their games over the winter.

Grange 1st XI lost to Aberdeenshire  1st XI by 2 wickets

Grange 224-7 (50 overs Patel 89, Holmes 48), Aberdeenshire 225-8 (49.5 overs, Coles 3-52, Holmes 3-45)

Link to scorecard

The second tour of the year to Aberdeen, brought no reward for a marginally stronger (well much stronger on paper) Grange team compared to their last visit. Anyway, Grange, decided to make the game extra hard, by a) not getting enough runs, b) dropping loads of catches, c) bowling like drains, so they did pretty well to only lose by wickets on the penultimate bowl of the game. Great catch by young Rankin, standing in for Stuart Chalmers, who was diagnosed with fat ankle overnight. The Stags managed to survive the night out in Aberdeen pretty much intact if not slightly muted. I watched Louis Theroux's documentary on crystal meth on Sunday night, which removed any relevance of losing a cricket match.

Grange 2nd XI beat RH Costorphine 2nd XI by 151 runs
Portgower Place

Grange 332 for 4 – Heathcote 101, Rae 51, Leckie 50, M Powell 44 no, Hodge 40, Hearn 30 no
RH Corstorphine 181 all out – Thomas 4 for 29

Lovely day, lovely pitch, all made even lovelier by being put into bat.  Our highest partnership of the season, 123 in 27 overs, was the ideal base for the savagery to come. 200 came off the last twenty overs, including 94 off the last six. Tim Heathcote made his first ever century but everyone made hay with Duncan Hodge and Michael Powell especially severe, each scoring three sixes. We attacked early and, with Tim Heathcote fighting fatigue to take three great catches behind the stumps, they were 35 for 4. At 25 overs, they were ahead of us and there was a nervous 20 minutes when we came off for rain, but a tight spell from Michael Powell (2 for 17 off 10) gave us back control.  Michael Thomas took out the tailenders to give him 4 wickets. A big win by 151 runs against the third-placed team in the league.

Under 13s Do The Club Proud In National Championship
Written by Simon Smith
Having won the Scottish Cup and safely negotiated a tricky away tie against South Northumberland in the first national play-off round, the Under 13s travelled to Woodhouse Grange CC just outside York for the North Region Finals of the MCC Spirit of Cricket National Club Championship.

The event was scheduled for Wednesday but postponed due to heavy rain, so the troops set out from Edinburgh at 5am on Thursday for what proved to be a long, wet, but thoroughly enjoyable day.

Further rain meant that the first game, against County Durham champions Washington CC, was delayed until 1pm and reduced to 10 overs per side. Skipper Will Edwards opted to bowl first, and Tom Sole and George Hairs gave Grange a steady but wicketless start. Oscar Ball claimed the first wicket courtesy of a superb catch at mid-on by Fergus Crawley, typical of an excellent collective fielding performance.

Washington ended on 88-3, leaving Grange a chase of just under 9 an over for victory. After another rain delay, Matthew Angelini led the charge. Will was also looking good, until being run out at the non-striker’s end for 13 when the bowler dropped a catch onto the stumps.

This piece of ill-fortune could have been seen as an indication that it wasn’t to be our day, but to their credit Tom and Oscar held the innings together, finishing on 10 and 15 respectively. Despite these efforts Washington held on and progressed to the final, where a win secured them one of the four places at the National Finals.

Another downpour then rendered the pitch unplayable, so the clash with Thornton Cleveleys (the Lancashire and North West champions) was settled by a bowl-out. Coach Angelini chose the same five bowlers who had been used in the Washington game, and the decision paid off, with George Hairs hitting with both of his deliveries as Grange triumphed by 4 hits to 2.

So third place in the North Region Finals and an overall UK ranking of joint 9th was the reward for the efforts of Captain Will, his team, and the hardy band of supporters whose presence was much appreciated – especially given the early start! Particular thanks also go to Steve Crawley, who scored and gave up a day at Edgbaston to support the lads!

Well done to everyone involved – the positive attitude, good behaviour and of course standard of play, were a real credit to the club.

Grange Sunday XI v Dollar - 2 August
Written by Rawdon Hesketh

Grange 128 for 10 in 39.1 overs (C Conwell 28, C Coles 24).  Dollar 86 all out in 33.5 overs.

A wicket badly missing the TLC supplied by Lee Spendlove (now of Grange) was revealed when we removed the covers on arriving at Dollar Academy. The toss was duly won and the batting order decided (not easy to keep everyone happy) with Mark Enos delighted to be as high as nine in the order.  A solid middle order of Coles, J Stokes and Milroy with Heathcote coming in at ten and the captain felt a score of 120 plus would be enough. At tea (128 for 10), we were able to pick out two great past captains of the school First Eleven on the honours board, namely Sanjay Patel and Robert W Fraser ( could he be related to our own Bobby Frazer?).On returning to the field of play, the captain took the game firmly under control by giving the first 10 overs to Enos and Rankin (9 runs conceded).  The two CC’s (Conwell & Coles) then had a twirl and finished with 3 for 14 and 2 for 13 respectively, after which the captain decided less pace was required and brought himself on for a short spell (2 for 13).  Finally, Tim Heathcote had his first bowl for the Grange and finished with 1 for 18 off 6.  For the historians, we have to go back to the 1980’s to find the name Heathcote in the bowling analysis.  Peter Mountstephen, Chris Murphy shared the wicketkeeping duties and a great team effort saw us win the game by bowling Dollar out for 86 in 33.5 overs.
