The following article has appeared in the Evening News, the Scotsman, both papers' online versions, and on the Cricket Scotland website: Grange Cricket Club has confirmed the signing of South Australia’s 6’ 7” left-arm paceman Allan Wise for the 2009 season. Wise, who has just completed his first season with the Redbacks after five years with Victoria, replaces Kiwi Warren McSkimming at Portgower Place as the club seeks to defend its SNCL Premier Division title. With 100 first class wickets and a Cricket Australia level two coaching badge, Wise is sure to strengthen the club on and off the pitch. First eleven captain Sanjay Patel certainly thinks so. “Losing Warren after his contribution to our successful 2008 campaign was a blow, but we’re delighted to have a bowler of Allan’s quality coming on board.” Club Coach Simon Smith is also pleased with the signing. “Quite apart from what he offers with the ball, Allan’s coaching credentials are important to us. Our junior set-up has come a long way in the last few years, and we’re keen to ensure it continues to improve going forward. Having Allan join our coaching team will help us enormously.” And for Wise himself, his Scottish adventure can’t come around quick enough. “I just can’t wait to get stuck in. I went to the club a few years ago when I was in Edinburgh visiting friends, and thought it looked like a great place to play cricket. Edinburgh is such a beautiful city too, so I’m really looking forward to getting over there.” The club enjoyed further good news this week when it received the go-ahead to install a brand new two-lane net practice facility in time for the start of the season. Head Groundsman Lee Spendlove, who joined the club in November, has already begun work on the project. President John Little was particularly happy to receive approval for the project. “This is great news for us. The old nets were no longer fit for purpose and replacing them had become a priority. The new facility will help us provide the quality of training that all our players, junior and senior, require if they wish to improve.” Grange also enters the new season having extended its agreement with principal sponsor FNZ. Chief Executive Warren Gee is delighted the financial services technology company is able to continue its association with the club. “As an ex-rugby player and keen cricket follower I am fully aware of the support local sports clubs need from the corporate sector in order to succeed and nurture the next generation of players, so I am especially pleased to renew FNZ’s sponsorship of Grange and wish all the club’s teams a successful and enjoyable season.” |

Under 13s and Under 11s Both Pick Up Silverware! |
|

Both the Under 11s and the Under 13s finished with 100% records to win the Lothian indoor leagues on Sunday (22 March). Steady contributions from Sandy Morrison (16), Mikey Hay-Smith (11) and Azeem Nabi (10) helped the Under 11s to 273. Azeem and Mikey then picked up a wicket each, as did Patrick Ritchie and Max Hancock, in keeping Penicuik to 245 in reply. And solid partnerships of 20, 42, 16 and 36 saw the Under 13s breach the 300-barrier for the fourth time in five games. Matthew Angelini led the way with 29, supported ably by William Edwards (25), Duncan Player (18), Mark Allan (15) and Ross Morrison (11), as the Stags ended on 314. William, Ross, and Cameron Sloman then took two wickets apiece as Penicuik totalled 248. Both teams were presented with their trophies afterwards. Congratulations to all the players who represented the club during the course of the event, to Joe for managing and scoring for both Stag sides, and to the mums and dads who helped out and supported the teams. Well done everyone. A great start to the year! |

Wins For Both U11s And U13s In Carlton Double-Header |
|

Both the U11s and the U13s came through tight games to register identical 11-run victories in the double-header against their Carton rivals on Sunday. Sandy Morrison led the way with 18 as the Stags posted 262 batting first in the U11 clash, before Mikey Hay-Smith (2 for 15) kept a cool head to bowl the final over of the match and restrict Carlton to 251. The U13 game was more of a run-fest, with the Stags rattling up 306 batting first. Runs were shared around, with William Edwards (23), Rory Turnbull (15), Matthew Angelini (14), Duncan Player (13), and Mark Allan (12) all contributing. But even with such a big score on the board, it was to be no easy win, as the Stags had even more trouble getting wickets than their opponents had in the first innings, picking up just three to the four Carlton had managed. Thankfully there was enough of a cushion for the lads to hold on for victory. Both the U11s and the U13s remain unbeaten with just one round of games to go, and both sides face their Penicuik peers in that final round this Sunday (22 March). Can the lads finish the indoor season with a perfect 100% record? Get along to Westwoods to cheer on both our teams and find out! Action kicks off at 12.30pm. |

Semi-Successful Finals Night For Stags |
|
Written by Simon Smith

An exciting evening’s action saw Grange pick up two awards but just miss out on the big one at the CricketMedia SuperSixes Finals Night last night (Friday). In a thrilling semi-final the lads held their nerve to come through against Watsonians by just 10 runs. Batting first the Stags rattled up 148-2 thanks to 34 from Ollie Hairs, 27no from Stuart Moffat, and 25no each from Giles Holmes and Stuart Chalmers. Superb death bowling from stand-in skipper Neil McCallum (2 for 22) and Stuart Chalmers then prevented Watsonians from chasing down the target and gave the Stags a berth in the final against Martin Currie / HBOS Corporate. With four Grangemen in the Martin Currie / HBOS Corporate side, ten out of the twelve players in the final were Stags, so it was almost a win-win situation! Opposition captain Fraser Watts chose to bat, and scored a quick-fire 28 to get the ball rolling. Ralph Campbell added 30no, and Stuart Davidson belted 62no to set the Stags 149 for victory. Despite Neil McCallum’s best efforts (30no), some wily bowling from Stuart Davidson, Ralph Campbell and former Carlton skipper Spike MacLeod, and a typically champagne all-round display from keeper-bowler Gregor Maiden helped the bankers to retain the trophy by restricting the Stag reply to just 95-5. But the Stags did pick up the two other awards on offer – highest team total in the tournament for the 222 racked up against Penicuik in round 2, and highest individual score for the 71no made by Stuart Chalmers in the same game. And with such a strong Stag presence in the Martin Currie / HBOS Corporate side, it looks as though the squad is in good shape as the outdoor season approaches! Thanks to Sandy Scotland and his team of umpires and scorers, to tournament organiser Ben Fox of Cricket Scotland, and of course to tournament sponsors CricketMedia, for making the event such an enjoyable experience for all the players. |
