May 2013

Welcome to another season “Down at the Grange”. After the floods of 2012, I can report that the ground has recovered well and is in good condition. The boundary wall has been rebuilt, the practice nets recarpeted and they are being used extensively.

Management changes/appointments

Following the untimely passing of our Steward, Margaret McCullim, the Grange Executive have been exploring how the Club can best be managed going forward.  After extensive research Ali Ross has been appointed Club Manager to oversee all club matters.  As a result of his appointment, he has had to resign his position as Club Vice Chairman. It is also anticipated that Lee Spendlove (our groundsman) will move into the club flat which historically was always the groundsman’s residence. Both of these moves should strengthen the Club’s management and ensure the continuing success of Scotland’s foremost sports club.

Club Sponsor

Barclays are in the third year of their sponsorship and we are most grateful for their support.

Kit Supplier

We are continuing to use Stuart Surridge for all our branded clothing. All purchases are available via our website (see Club Merchandise) where products/prices are on display. They are of good quality and competitively priced and our sponsors expect all players to wear them on all possible occasions.

Coaching

Once again the Club has decided to invest their sponsorship monies into coaching and no professional player is being engaged this season. The coaching staff are:

Michael Powell (Director of Cricket) supported by Ian Sandbrook (a Cricket Scotland employee and qualified coach) and Gordon Allan.

The Teams

There have been a number of high quality players joining the Club during the close season and we will also benefit in July/August when a number of talented juniors become available.  Our Chairman of Selectors reckons that we have some 25 members all capable of representing the 1st XI if available and required. This augers well for the 2nd and 3rd XI’s and the Committee are looking forward to a successful season.

The start has been encouraging with some outstanding victories by all teams. The 1st XI is undefeated in the Scottish Cup and the 2nd XI beat Dunfermline by 250 runs after scoring 360 for 8 (could this be a 2nd XI record?)

Juniors

A very fulsome news letter was issued in March of this year. It was very informative and we should be proud of our Juniors and their continued successes.  This season they will be putting out 8 teams in the various age groups.  Obviously, this takes some managing and we are indebted to the Junior Committee and their helpers in organising a very heavy programme.

Last month the Junior Committee organised a pre-season Barclays’ Junior Stags Awards Reception. One hundred and thirty parents and junior members attended when Barclays’ training tops were distributed.  Barclays, represented by Mark Little and John Godfrey, introduced a new initiative “The Barclays’ Player of the Month Award” and three junior members received awards for their achievements over the winter months.

It was a most enjoyable and successful evening and we all look forward to reading who the winners will be during the season.

Finally

The season will be a hectic one for our groundstaff with Scotland playing three Yorkshire Bank 40 games against Essex, Derbyshire and Surrey. In addition we have visits from Pakistan, Australia A and Australia. Let us hope for better weather, a successful and enjoyable season with runs and wickets in abundance.

Yours in cricket
